This project will develop a guideline to support the successful implementation of battery electric vehicles in surface mining fleets with clear, practical recommendations to help companies make informed investment decisions and navigate:
- Infrastructure Needs: Power grid requirements, fast-charging networks, and energy storage solutions.
- Operational Considerations: Route optimization, regenerative braking strategies, and haulage cycle planning.
- Safety & Risk Management: Fire suppression, thermal runaway mitigation, and emergency response protocols.
That’s why GMG is launching Implementation of Battery Electric Vehicles in Surface Mining, and we want your input!
The guideline will dive into the real-world challenges of deploying BEVs, from charging infrastructure and energy management to mine planning, workforce readiness, safety, and operational integration. It builds on GMG’s existing work on underground BEVs, but this time the focus is squarely on surface operations – and all of the complexity that comes with them.
Why this matters:Electrifying our surface fleets is a massive technical and cultural shift. With trials underway but few roadmaps available, this guideline will provide much-needed clarity and shared industry direction. Your experience – whether you’re in operations, engineering, OEM development, or integration – is critical to building a practical, usable resource that reflects the realities of surface deployment.
This is your chance to influence the paper from the ground up and support the development of a resource that will help mine sites navigate the transition. If you’re involved with BEVs in surface mining — or planning to be — you won’t want to miss this.
